From Glory to Glory

Read 2 Corinthians 4:16-18

We all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.

-2 Corinthians 3:18 (KJV)

MY cousin, an artist, once painted a picture of Jesus as he appeared to his disciples after the Resurrection. The painting was wonderful. The disciples’ faces and gestures showed a mix of shock and reverence; and Jesus was human, but somehow much more than human. Everyone who saw the painting was deeply moved.

Then my cousin said that she was going to redo parts of the picture. We pleaded with her not to, thinking she could only do it harm. But the result took our breath away. The painting was even better, the colors deeper and the picture more real.

Something similar can happen with us as we allow God to “redo” us. In the hands of God, Christians are not transformed from wretched to miserable and then from miserable to not-too-bad. Instead, each of us is being transformed “from glory to glory.” Glory is not reserved for us in heaven; God gives us glory here and today.

When we think that we are worthless and unimportant, God, remind us that you have made us to be glorious. Amen.

Joke of the day.

This was sent to me by a good friend named Estelle.

Can’t beat a good Aggie joke.

A couple, both Aggies, had 9 children. They went to the doctor to see
about getting the husband “fixed”.

The doctor asked why, after 9 children, would you choose to do this.

The husband replied that they had read a recent article that 1 out of

every 10 children being born was Mexican and they didn’t want a

Mexican baby – especially since neither of them could speak Spanish.

My wife would love this one. :)

The Promise of a Home

Read John 14:1-7

Happy are those who live in your house [O Lord], ever singing your praise.

-Psalm 84:4 (NRSV)

MY parents divorced when I was a teenager. I was separated from my father, with my mother unhappy because I wouldn’t side with her against Dad. I wanted a home with both parents and loving relationships.

During this period someone invited me to church. The evangelist preached from John 14:1-4. He spoke about a place that was being prepared for those who believe in Christ. I saw in this promise the hope of a lasting home, acceptance, and loving relationships. I also saw guidance for how to reach that place and how to live my life.

Later I attended a friend’s church closer to where I lived. They sang, “This world is not my home.” The song reminded me of the sermon I had heard in the other church, and it strengthened my faith. Before I left, an elderly man told me, “The Lord will never leave you or forsake you, Honey.” (See Hebrews 13:5.) I didn’t know it then, but this was also a promise from Christ. I came to realize that his kindness was the beginning of many loving relationships given to me by the Lord.

Through the years, Christ has given me more reasons to hope in that prepared place — little deposits of the greater pledge. How remarkable my final home must be!

This would be my luck. Land the best job in the world but have to sit in the same cubical as this guy. Man, if the big guy rips a good one, life would be over for the little guy.

Read Numbers 6:22-27

God says, “As a mother comforts her child, so I will comfort you; you shall be comforted in Jerusalem.”

-Isaiah 66:13 (NRSV)

WHEN I was a child, I attended the funeral of a friend’s mother. The experience was one of the most traumatic of my young life. My friend threw herself across the casket, completely grief-stricken, because she did not want to leave her mother alone. She was crying and in deep anguish, and other people helped her up and took her out of the room.

This image remained with me for many years, and I wondered how I would react to the death of my mother.

When my mother died, I remembered that childhood incident. However, the people around me, the Body of Christ, assured me that my mother was not alone but was at rest in the loving arms of the Savior. Their words filled me with incredible peace and joy. They comforted me, and I gradually left behind the trauma and anguish.

Today I offer others similar comfort and hope.
