Read Numbers 6:22-27

God says, “As a mother comforts her child, so I will comfort you; you shall be comforted in Jerusalem.”

-Isaiah 66:13 (NRSV)

WHEN I was a child, I attended the funeral of a friend’s mother. The experience was one of the most traumatic of my young life. My friend threw herself across the casket, completely grief-stricken, because she did not want to leave her mother alone. She was crying and in deep anguish, and other people helped her up and took her out of the room.

This image remained with me for many years, and I wondered how I would react to the death of my mother.

When my mother died, I remembered that childhood incident. However, the people around me, the Body of Christ, assured me that my mother was not alone but was at rest in the loving arms of the Savior. Their words filled me with incredible peace and joy. They comforted me, and I gradually left behind the trauma and anguish.

Today I offer others similar comfort and hope.
