Learning Linux

Dealing with a few new projects that I’m doing I am having to learn Linux now. I had learned a few of the basic commands several years ago. I didn’t keep up with it because at the time I wanted to use DOS instead. Now, I have no choice but to learn Linux.

So far I have become a believer about the stability of a Linux server BUT, it has turned out to be a nightmare to get anything done. Small things that I take for granted in windows eat my lunch in Linux. Such as, setting up an FTP server and all the user rights and such…not very easy in Linux if you don’t know what your doing. Oh, did I tell you, when it comes to Linux I don’t know what I’m doing. Trying to learn but it isn’t that easy. Setting up virtuals for web sites…the first time is very hard but after that it isn’t really all that bad, but not as easy as it is with IIS. Doing something as simple as file sharing turns out to be confusing and difficult. I’m trying to set up Somba but I’m not having much luck with that right now.

I know that it is just a matter of what you know. I know window’s products very well, that is what I have spent the most amount of time with and I’m happy with that. I am now trying to learn Linux and finding that it isn’t as easy as I was hoping for or what I’m used to. So naturally I would find things harder than they probably should be but is the pain worth it.

Is it better in the long run? I would think so but it is hard to see in the beginning. My development time has doubled and my productivity has fallen. This equals more cost for less product…haha…thank God I work for the State of Texas or I might be in trouble.

Bottom line is…I like Linux but it isn’t easy when your just starting to learn it.

Does Linux like me…I’m still working on that one.
